Philip Mayes

Mighty Kingdom
Philip Mayes is the founder and Managing Director of Mighty Kingdom.

Philip’s career in games began more than 15 years ago, when he moved to Adelaide Australia from New Zealand to take up a Junior Programmer role at Ratbag Games in 2005. Following the closure of Ratbag later that year, Philip joined Krome Studios in Adelaide as a Senior Programmer.

Philip’s experiences at Ratbag and Krome were critical to the formation of Mighty Kingdom. He saw first-hand the benefits that scale can bring to a company, and how creating and owning your own IP was essential to the future of the industry.

Philip founded Mighty Kingdom in 2011, now Australia’s largest headquartered game developer. The company has carved out an enviable niche making games that appeal to broad audiences with some of the world’s largest brands such as LEGO, Disney and Sony. In the past decade, Mighty Kingdom has released more than 50 games that have been played by more than 50 million players worldwide across multiple platforms.

Throughout this time, Philip has continued to re-invest into Mighty Kingdom, constantly pushing himself and the company to greater heights. In 2019, he secured investment that put the company on the path to an IPO, which was completed in April 2021. This secured the future of Mighty Kingdom and helped redefine what was possible to other game companies across the country.

Philip has always been determined to create an industry that presented the same opportunities to new developers that were available to him when he arrived in 2005. He has always been a major advocate for the games industry as a whole, pushing for a “whole-of-industry” approach that includes support for independently owned companies as well as incentives for larger studios.

Philip has continued to push and ensure Mighty Kingdom is at the forefront of policy – advocating for and implementing many progressive policies that have opened up the games industry to an even wider range of people and shown them that there is a place, and career, for them in game development.
